How SEO can help your business grow

As search continues to change and evolve, SEO is no longer about just winning clicks or impressions – it’s about driving targeted traffic that builds brand recognition and drives your business forward.

A strong SEO strategy means attracting qualified traffic, achieving higher conversion rates, and improving brand awareness. Over time, the goal is to create positive brand recognition that improves trust and ensures long-term business success.

SEO provides around-the-clock visibility to ensure your business shows up in the search results when users are searching for your goods or services online. Unlike paid marketing mediums (think Google Ads, Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads), search engine optimisation (SEO) continues to work for your business around the clock.

SEO vs AEO/GEO Services

Search engine optimisation (SEO) has been around for almost 30-years at this point. Since the late 90s, SEO’s have been optimising for search. The way that SEO works and how search engines rank websites has changed dramatically, but the basic principal of optimising for organic search – AKA SEO – is as old as search engines themselves.

As search continues to evolve, two new acronyms have entered the discourse over the last 12-months or so – Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

What is AEO?

AEO is about optimising content to appear in things like Google’s AI Overviews (AIO) which provide direct answers to questions. At the time of writing, AIO appear for 21% of all searches and 57.9% of all questions.

AEO operates in a very similar way to how Google’s featured snippets (which are rapidly disappearing and being replaced) used to operate. In other words, we want to optimise for short, concise answers to questions. We do this in the way that we structure content and the language that we use as well as technical optimisations like Structured Data & Schema (not in all cases).

What is GEO?

GEO or Generative Engine Optimisation could just be the most hyped SEO buzzword of the last year.

GEO is about optimising content for LLMs and generative AI platforms like Google Gemini, Perplexity, Chat GPT, and other AI/LLM platforms. GEO is influenced by a lot of the same factors that help content to rank in AEO, however, it also relies on other trust signals – kind of like what SEO has relied on for ~30 years.

Is SEO Being Replaced by AEO/GEO?

In a word – no.

We know that’s not the attractive, panic-stations/throw out the rule book kind of answer that a lot of people are looking for – but it’s the truth. There is a misconception that AEO and GEO have rendered SEO obsolete and that all of the SEO principles are now outdated – but that couldn’t be further from the truth. AEO and GEO rely on almost all of the same principles as traditional search optimisation – content, authority, technical. Yes, there are some other things that we now consider such as structure, entity strength, and topical authority/popularity, however, for the most part – all of the same SEO principles still apply for AEO and GEO.

FAQs

All of your burning SEO questions, answered

It depends on your business, your market, and your goals.

Not all businesses are the right fit for SEO agency services. Some businesses are better off investing their money elsewhere.

Transparency is the most important aspect of any successful working relationship. To ensure that we build a relationship of mutual respect with our clients (and prospective clients) we will conduct a preliminary audit to determine whether SEO is a good fit for your business model.

We do not work with everyone that approaches us – and we wear that with a badge of honour. It could well be the factor that stops our founder driving a Ferrari someday, but it is the way we choose to do business. Our team is here to generate lasting SEO results for businesses in Australia. If we feel that we can help your business with SEO, then we will take you on as a client – it really is that simple.

The best time to start SEO was years ago – the second-best time is now. The fact is, the sooner that you start investing in SEO marketing – the sooner you can expect to see results. Irrespective of whether you are a new website, or an old website looking to revamp and increase your online presence, the earlier that you start investing in SEO – the faster that you can expect to see results.

SEO is a financial commitment for any business, so we recommend that you have the resources to commit to long-term spend before beginning an SEO campaign. A stop-start SEO campaign will not yield the best outcome, so it is always better to wait until you are in a position to commit for the long term before you start working with an SEO agency.

Search engine optimisation is the process of researching, refining, and optimising the on-site and off-site elements of your website to enhance your organic visibility in the search engines.

Google Ads let you buy (rent) space at the top of Google search results. When you do Google Ads, you are renting a space at the top of Google so that your prospective customers can find your website. So long as you continue to pay for each click and impression that you receive, then your business will remain at the top of the search results.

Google Ads can provide instant visibility – but it comes at a cost. Google ads is an effective way to generate leads – so long as you are willing to pay for each enquiry and lead that you receive. While there is no disputing the efficacy of Google Ads for delivering immediate results, it is difficult to scale a business when you are paying for each lead that you receive.

The good thing is that you do not have to choose between SEO marketing and PPC/SEM. You are free to run them concurrently and use them to generate more leads for your business. For new websites, we recommend running a PPC Google Ads campaign before investing in SEO services because it will give you a feel for the kinds of leads you want to receive

After hundreds of campaigns and thousands of hours dissecting their outcomes, we can say that creating helpful, insightful content that provides value to users is the #1 Google ranking factor. Answering user questions and providing value in the form of direct, no-nonsense content means that users can find answers to most (if not all) of their questions in a single destination.

Google has been continually reinforcing the value of helpful, SEO friendly content with core algorithm updates such as the ‘Helpful Content Update’ which, as the name would suggest, aimed to reward websites that produced insightful, helpful content.

Ongoing content marketing is what sets us apart from almost every other SEO agency. In almost every SEO campaign that we undertake, monthly content marketing is an essential element that keeps our clients ahead of their competitors.

When we talk about content marketing, we’re not talking about writing clickbait articles that capitalise on trends or news-related events. We talk about creating evergreen content that addresses user queries and turns your blog into an industry-respected resource for all topics related to your niche.

In a word – very.

Today, backlinks make up for 30-40% of how a website ranks in Google. Backlinks are – by far – the most important off-site SEO ranking factors. For businesses that want to increase their rankings for competitive search terms, building relevant, authoritative off-site links is the most critical off-site optimisation to make.

In essence, links act as a trust signal with Google and other search engines. The more high-quality links pointing to a website, the more likely you are to rank in Google. Here are six essential factors that we consider when building backlinks for clients:

  • The traffic of the referring website
  • The anchor text used in the link
  • The number of outbound links from a page
  • The traffic of the referring website
  • The authority of the referring website
  • The age of the page sending the link

Think about backlinks like a job reference. Getting a job reference from a coworker or someone in your department is helpful. But getting a job reference from the MD or CEO is better. When we acquire links, we look for the ‘CEO’ and ‘MD’ links that pass trust and authority.

Search engine optimisation can take anywhere from around 3 months up to 6 months until you begin to see results. Depending on factors like domain age, starting position, industry competition, and previous SEO work – this figure could be slightly shorter or much longer.

SEO has a cumulative effect whereby the longer you are doing it, the easier it is to get results. For just about any SEO campaign, the ‘slowest’ period of growth will be in the first few months as we put together your strategy, roll out on-site changes, fix up technical errors, and begin off-site SEO work.

Each website is different. While we can’t provide guarantees or exact timelines, we will be able to provide you a rough timeline following an initial consultation. During your initial SEO consult, we’ll be able to review your website, previous SEO work, and understand what is required from an on-site, off-site, technical, and content perspective to get things moving.

The cost of SEO services in Australia ranges from $1,400 per month to $10,000+ per month based on the scope of the services. The cost of SEO in Australia can vary dramatically based on the size of the website and the competition in the industry. SEO pricing is based on the resources that are required to get results. Some of the most important factors that will influence the cost of search engine optimisation in Australia, include:

  • The age and history of your website
  • Your current website health
  • The number of new pages that need to be created
  • The size of the market that you are competing in
  • The work being carried out by your competitors
  • Previous digital marketing work that has been completed in the past

Our SEO services are catered towards the individual requirements of each website. We don’t offer “SEO packages” or on-size-fits-all solutions because – in our opinion at least – it’s a lazy money grab for SEO agencies that can’t be bothered customising their strategies. Following an initial SEO consultation with one of our SEO specialists, we’ll provide a roadmap and custom strategy with SEO pricing.

Technically, yes. SEO is completely free – anyone with a reasonable level of knowledge about what is involved in search engine optimization can put together some basic best practices. Over time, you may find it difficult to compete with companies and websites that are employing the services of SEO experts and professionals.

Just like anything, you get out exactly what you put in. The greater understanding and level of expertise that you can apply, the more substantial the results are going to be.

We work with business owners and digital marketing managers to make life easier. Our SEO specialists design plans to increase your organic online presence and ensure your SEO success.

Unfortunately we do not offer one-off SEO audits, ‘setups’, or consultation.

Providing a one-off SEO service is kind of like asking a builder to make you a house in a single day. Even if they were to attempt the project, the end result would be rushed, unstable, and unreliable. The same can be said for one off services.

All of our SEO services are delivered on a campaign basis. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it is not possible to deliver a result that we can be proud of in a matter of a month or two.

SEO work takes time, and we do not take on one-off projects because we cannot deliver a result that we can stand behind. Search marketing is a cumulative process that takes time. All of our campaigns are delivered on a month-by-month basis; however, we strongly recommend holding off on SEO if you cannot commit to a minimum 6-month period of work.

Yes, we provide an SEO reporting dash with 24/7 access that includes traffic, trends, SEO rankings, and a range of other important KPIs. We give you direct access to the same keyword tracking tools, ranking tools, traffic data tools, and everything else we use to measure your campaign. Transparency is the key to trust, which is why we want to give you complete visibility over where your money is being spent and what that means for your business.

In general, Google will roll out about 3-4 ‘core algorithm updates’ each year. A core algorithm update is a significant, universal update to Google’s ranking systems and algorithm that affects most websites. Some core updates – like the March 2024 core algorithm update – are much more impactful than others.

In some cases, Google will provide specific guidance on what a core update is targeted – either before or after the fact – which can help to shed some light on why certain changes may occur.

It’s important to state that while Google continues to update its algorithm and SERP layout, the underlying principles that guide our SEO services never really change. Our goal is to create valuable content that aligns with user intent and meets Google’s best practices. So long as you follow Google’s best practices and steer clear of blackhat SEO tactics, algorithm updates shouldn’t be a cause for major concern.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a team of SEO experts like us, or you’re doing your own DIY SEO services – Google doesn’t really provide direct updates about the latest changes to rankings – outside of core updates at least. The way that we keep ahead of the curve is to continue testing and changing and then correlating those changes to what we see in terms of website traffic and organic search rankings.

We are always running tests on our own websites (some of them are publicly known, others are just test websites that we play with) to get a better sense of how search algorithms are changing. Studying what’s working in the SERPs and drawing a line between correlation and causation (not always easy) is how we make that happen.

Outside of our own testing, we also read industry news and reading case studies and tests from fellow SEO experts around the globe. We are thoroughly immersed in the industry and take great pride in staying up to date with the latest changes and what they mean for our clients.

Your Content Goes HereJust like anything, you’re always best to work with a specialist.

Start by understanding whether the agency offers a full suite of digital marketing services, or whether they offer SEO services as their core competency. Whenever you work with a generalist digital agency, you tend to end up working with juniors or being handballed between account managers. That’s not to say that full-service agencies don’t have any decent SEO consultants on staff, it’s more to say that they can be few and far between.

It’s important to ask the right questions, things like:

• Who will be doing the work?
• How many SEO consultants do you have on the team?
• Who will be my point of contact?
• Have you had success with similar campaigns in the past?
• What do you think the biggest challenges to success are going to be?
• How often will I get reports and what are the KPIs for my campaign?

Feel out your options. If you’ve asked for an SEO proposal and been sent a 40-page deck instead – then chances are you’re working with a digital agency that’s better at sales than they are at search engine optimisation. If you get a customised proposal that outlines your strategy, business pain points, and roadmap to SEO growth – then chances are you’re onto a winner.
