General Notes on the May 2026 Google Core Update
The May 2026 Google Core Update is the second core update of 2026 and follows on from the March 2026 Core Update and March 2026 Spam Update.
For those in the SEO community, the announcement doesn’t come as a huge surprise given that we have seen such a “sedate” last few weeks in the search results.

Google has not published any further information or a supporting blog around what we can expect during the update. At this stage, SEOs are playing a guessing game. If we were to take an educated guess, we would say that the update will continue to double down on Google’s push towards rewarding original content with unique viewpoints.
Last week Google sent the SEO/AEO/GEO community into meltdown with their Search Central Documentation which information around “Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search”. The takeaway from the document was Google saying that good GEO was just SEO and that publishers should focus on creating unique content instead of “commodity content”.
Based on those updates, as well as what we have seen during the March Core and Spam updates, we would take an educated punt in saying that the May 2026 core update will continue to reward unique, original content that creates real value for users. In theory, that is nothing groundbreaking, however, given the influx of low-quality “commodity” content that we have seen inundate the SERPs over the last two years, the implications are fairly serious for a lot of websites.
What should I do now?
Before you pack up your SEO strategy or jump down the next rabbit hole on Linkedin we strongly recommend that you wait to see what happens during the update. It’s easy to panic and decide to uproot your strategy mid-way through a Google Core Update, however, this is not advised. Core updates move in waves, expect to see fluctuations over the next two weeks as the update rolls out. It is not a “flick switch” moment – it will take time to roll out and for the full effects to be seen.
